  • What to call FCA cars

The other day, I saw someone refer to their cars as “FCA’s” in a forum. I see two problems with that. First, FCA is probably not the favored acronym for Fiat Chrysler products outside the executive suits of FCA itself; and second, for heaven’s sake, it’s not a possessive, it’s a plural, and there’s nothing being left out, so what’s with the apostrophe? It’s a conundrum, because right now there really is no good way to refer to FCA cars. The former Chrysler is supposed to be called FCA US LLC, “though it is acceptable to drop the LLC after the first use,” but to help readers, we tend to call it, well, the former Chrysler. It’s definitely longer and I wish they…

  • Is Chrysler deliberately slowing down its V6 cars?

The V6 in my car is “made” by the eight-speed automatic that came with it. Before that transmission, the 300 V6 was almost pokey. With it, 0-60 times officially comes in 6.6 seconds (down from around 8.6), while highway mileage shot up from an EPA-registered 27 to 31. In real life, long highway trips yield 34 mpg, not bad for a full size upscale sedan. But it reacts slowly, compared to its potential. It is still faster shifting than the five-speed it replaced or the old Chrysler four-speed, or most competing transmissions, but when you get the Hemi, it’s tuned for faster shifts. The Charger SRT has faster shifts still. Why? Is this the nature of the different transmissions used in the…

  • Upgrading the Allpar forums

Today, I upgraded the Allpar forums to Xenforo 1.5. The process is a bit more complicated than you’d think. While WordPress lets you click a single button (well, really, two single buttons) and then does everything on its own, here’s Xenforo’s process, which is identical to that of some other forums: Issue a notice to everyone warning them of an impending shutdown, so they don’t get stuck with a carefully written post that disappears as the site goes down Post something on Facebook. Download the update archive and uncompress it Shut down the forums Open a file transfer program, e.g. Fetch, Transmit, CuteFTP, etc Upload all files Visit a special address and run the updater Re-upload modified graphics Check for template changes that…

  • Allpar: new stuff, ad changes

I’ve taken out an annoying header ad from the mobile version of Allpar (the home page). I also took out the ineffectual “slide in” reminder on the news page to join us in New Jersey at the meet. As I said last week, ad experimentation is an ongoing thing from time to time as we try to get the balance between annoying you and annoying the bank. As usual, you can opt out via the forum upgrade/ad bypass system. I hope you like this week’s features, which, while they focus on muscle cars, are still pretty diverse — a first-hand writeup of a Woodward event that includes short-track drag racing, sales and production of the Dodge Challenger, and a contemporary engineering…

  • Steam heat on Allpar?

Some may say that posting steam heat and washing machine repairs on Allpar is pushing it, but there’s a reason why they’re both there, along with a section on dealing with Honeywell Ademco house alarms. I didn’t have any other place for them. Avid Mopar news fans are probably unaware of the Allpar repairs section, which is a bit of a hodgepodge, but one which has saved thousands of dollars just for people I know about. One transmission repair shop said they were going to stop doing Chrysler four-speeds altogether before reading a page there; when they followed the guidance, they found that their rebuilt Chrysler transmissions were as good as any other. (They’d been using the wrong fluid, among other…
